Who we are

Our Company

We are Artificer Legal Pty Limited ABN 83 678 885 179, an incorporated legal practice governed by the Legal Profession Uniform Law (NSW). We operate Australia-wide under various State and Territory legislation that recognises Australian Legal Practitioners, and we have expressly registered as an operating law practice in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and Western Australia.

We are privately owned, operated and driven to create a sustainable business that re-defines what it is to operate as modern legal and technology professionals servicing industries in business for the future.

What we do

Hybrid legal and technology services

We solve complex legal and regulatory compliance problems using a technology-first approach. In other words, we deploy modern software to help organisations comply with laws, and wherever the technology has a capability gap where it can’t (or shouldn’t) be used to assist in legal compliance, we offer legal services to fill those gaps.

This means practitioners at Artificer are inherently cross-disciplinarians, and have a strong understanding of how legal compliance technology works, as well as the legal challenges faced by modern organisations and the extent to which technology can assist.

Our Principal

Tyler Wright
Principal Lawyer & Technology Consultant

An experienced commercial technology lawyer, Tyler has acted for some of Australia’s most recognisable technology-driven companies helping to close transactions, respond to major cyber incidents and resolve complex disputes where the involvement of technology plays a complicating factor.

Tyler started his career working in commercial roles in software business before pivoting towards law. Since then, he has worked in a variety of legal positions in successful Australian technology companies, including as General Counsel for a multi-national technology services firm specialising in finance and government software implementations.

The mission of Artificer draws inspiration on Tyler’s successful track record of driving his own redundancy as a full-time legal counsel. Tyler used technological transformation, a relentless pursuit of process improvement and modern regulatory compliance technology to free himself from desk-based administration, allowing him to focus on delivering real human-to-human service.

Tyler handles new business enquires, product development and strategic leadership for Artificer. If you think we might be able to assist you, send us an enquiry and Tyler will come back to you.

How we’re different

We’re not just advisers, we’re builders too

While we offer the services of both a traditional law practice and a traditional technology consultancy, we’re best equipped for helping solve legal compliance challenges using a combination of the two. Traditional law firms don’t normally help you implement their advice into technological processes, but we’re able to do just that. You can think of us more as builders of digital compliance infrastructure, but with a direct capability to advise as well. Having both capabilities and keeping them well developed is core to our mission of being like the Future Industries we want to help.

We prioritise modern, digitally-enabled service

It’s overdue for most law practices to be routinely paperless and capable of conducting effective business with clients no matter how often they travel, or where they happen to be. We’ve taken it one step further and heavily customised our software to ensure a smooth flow from initial scoping through to the conclusion of service delivery. You might think that makes things complicated, but we find it’s the focus on the little things that make the experience better.

Things like being able to track your budget in real time, or being able to sign documents on your screen, or being able to book an appointment with our practitioners just by following a simple link and seeing their availability. It’s amazing how these basics all add up to a better overall customer experience. This is best reflected in our subscription legal help-desk product ‘OnDemand’ – which allows you to apply direct legal assistance to any part of your organisation in a modern, tech-driven way.

We’re intentionally lean and independent

Most specialist technology law practices operate out of large or multinational law or consulting firms. Similarly, most technology services firms focused on implementation have either formed from (or integrated into) large management consultancies. By staying intentionally lean and independent, Artificer can offer a better value service than these firms. We’re not using fee income to pay for a network of expensive CBD offices, and we’re not driven by private equity setting high revenue targets year-on-year. We can pass on those savings to our clients in cheaper fees. You might be tempted to think this means we don’t have the budget to attract top talent; but we give our people what they really want: digitally-enabled work-life balance. That makes them happier and more focused practitioners.

What we stand for

Like our clients, we’re in business for a better and brighter future. That means we’re interested in helping companies that are facing challenges implementing novel technology. It also means compared to your average legal practice, we’re more enthusiastic about the way legal services are being replaced by advances in technology, and we’re excited to be a part of it.

We won’t solve a problem with legal advice if it’s unnecessary because we can solve the problem practically, or with technology. It’s remarkable the high percentage of legal services that are actually just administrative problems better handled by a proper technology system. Not on our watch.

We don’t go around forensically accounting for every minute our people assist you. We want to work on outcomes with you because we know that’s what makes happy clients and sustainable business. If we run a project for you, we may still use a time estimate and an hourly rate, but we’ll always be working on specific deliverables – outcomes we both agree on.

We’re a fully remote-capable workforce, and we were born on the internet. We use the best digital collaboration technology around, and we will never stop improving it. Our tech stack is the engine that drives our productivity, and it’s software you’d more typically find in a tech or cyber security firm, rather than a law practice. You’ll notice the difference straight away.

You can’t behave like a humour-devoid robot and still deliver top professional service. There’s also no point in using the best technology if it doesn’t free-up humans to give real service that makes tackling difficult challenges a pleasure. You will therefore find us to have a great sense of humour, whenever appropriate.

Technology can’t solve all our problems, but we know humans can be better informed, better organised and more productive if we work to understand the limitations of technology and weigh them properly with the benefits of its use. So while we are enthusiastic about its potential; we’re still cautious about the dangers of over-reliance on technology where humans would do better.

We’re committed to speaking and writing in a modern and understandable way; without unnecessarily using legalese or latin phrases. Sure, we have to engage with technical language sometimes (so we’ll be unpacking plenty of acronyms) but we’ll never use fancy language for its own sake.

The world is already too complicated for any one person (no matter how astute or educated) to keep track of everything at any one moment. It’s totally normal to ask questions that go to the very basics of a problem or situation, and to do so often. We will never give you cause to regret doing so.

Behind the name

We’re builders of digital compliance infrastructure for the Future Industries; Artificers. Our name carries meaning for us in this way, and in two others. The second is that we all share the goal of being masters of our craft; whether that craft is the practice of law, software engineering or the combination of both.

Artificer

/ɑːˈtɪfɪsə/

A master of their craft; a skilled craftsperson.

The third is that we’re increasingly becoming wielders of software technologies in the field of Artificial Intelligence, and in this sense to be an Artificer carries a novel meaning: to wield the power of AI; to be the creator of the artificial. It doesn’t matter to us if you have difficulty pronouncing our name, what matters to us most is that we’re remembered as professionals that prioritise practical implementation over just advice; that’s what it means to be an Artificer, not just an Adviser.
